The skyline of Spello with its stone houses and bell towers

Spello

At the foot of Mount Subasio, about 5 km from Foligno and 30 from Perugia. One of Italy’s most beautiful villages and a “City of Olive Oil”.

Splendidissima Colonia Julia

Founded by the Umbrians, it became Hispellum in Roman times and Caesar called it “Splendidissima Colonia Julia”. The walls and the archaeological remains around the village still tell of that greatness.

In the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the largest in Spello, the Baglioni Chapel holds frescoes by Pinturicchio.

The Infiorata

Every year, for Corpus Domini, the flower artists work through the night to lay carpets and pictures of flowers along the streets of the centre. It falls between May and June: for those dates, write to us early.

Olive oil and festivals

The land around Spello is planted with vines and olive trees, and extra virgin olive oil is its most precious product: the olive oil festival takes place between December and January. During the year there are weekly markets and village festivals.
